You can ride a 1930s subway train in NYC next month

If the 4:30pm sunsets weren’t enough to let you know that the holiday season is finally here, then some pretty spectacular vintage holiday trains just might.

In line with one of our favorite festive traditions, the New York Transit Museum is bringing back its holiday nostalgia rides this December, so you’ll soon be able to step inside a subway car that operated on the city’s tracks in the 1930s.

The vintage R1/9 train cars were once part of the Eight Avenue Line, which is now the A/C/E line, and remained in service until 1977, as reported by 6sqft.

The modes of transport are visually striking: their industrial-looking riveted steel exterior will take you back to a postwar city, with a touch of Christmas cheer in the form of a festive wreath hung on the front of the train.

You don’t need any type of special ticket to ride this time machine: you can just swipe your MetroCard like you would when hopping on any regular subway. The challenge is making sure you’re at the right place at the right time.

Eight of the vintage subway cars will be out in circulation every Sunday in December between 10am and 5pm from the 2nd Avenue/Houston Street station on the uptown F platform and the 96th Street downtown Q line.
