Here’s Why Everyone’s Swooning At The Stage Of Broadway’s New ‘Romeo + Juliet’

Calling all theater lovers and hopeless romantics to Circle in the Square Theater! An unmissable performance of Romeo + Juliet on Broadway, with lead’s Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, is putting audiences into a frenzy.

You may recognize Connor from his role as Nick in Netflix’s Heartstopper and his co-star, Rachel Zegler, as Lucy Gray from the most recent Hunger Games movie The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

The pair serve up a tantalizing version of the iconic love story, following the plot of star-crossed lovers and all sorts of chaos that ensues from a forbidden love affair. The play’s website describes it as “Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy [that] belongs to a new generation on the edge.”

Romeo + Juliet, which opened to the public on October 24th, is directed by Sam Gold, with music from Jack Antonoff and choreography by Sonya Tayeh. Audience members will need to buckle up for the play’s 2 hour and 20 minute duration, that includes a 10-minute intermission. It’s all taking place at Broadway‘s 623-seat Circle in the Square Theater on 235 W 50th Street.

So why can’t people stop obsessing over a story that’s been done time and time again? Well, for one, let’s start with the viral kiss scene. Audience members are privy to the jaw-dropping sight of Connor hoisting himself up to romantically kiss his lover (Zegler) with an impressive pull-up that brings a whole new life to Shakespeare’s balcony scene. Oh, but if that kiss wasn’t enough, there’s plenty more steamy lip-locking where that came from.

Surprisingly, the pair didn’t have an initial chemistry read; however, you’d think the two had been madly in love for years with the sparks that they bring to the stage.

If you’re looking for more reasons as to why this play is the talk of town in the industry right now, be prepared for Zegler’s powerful vocals that are a definite highlight.

As of now, the production is only set to run for a limited 20 weeks. That means theatergoers will only have until February 2025 to see the magic of this love story on stage.
