Why Are NYC Schools Closed The Day After Halloween?

Parents won’t have to worry about their kids staying up too late from a candy-induced sugar rush on Halloween next week because this year NYC students have the day off after Halloween! But no, NYC schools won’t be closed because of All Hallows’ Eve…though we’re sure students are looking forward to extending their spooky celebrations later into the night!

On Friday, November 1st, the DOE calendar shows that New York City public schools will be closed to observe Diwali. Known as the “Festival of Lights,” Diwali is India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists. And though Diwali is celebrated each year sometime between October and November, it wasn’t declared a public school holiday until June 2023.

This year, Diwali will begin on Friday, November 1st with celebrations taking place over the course of five days. And students will be thrilled to hear that they’ll still have more days off before the end of the year–and that’s not even including holiday and winter recess!
