These 8 NYC Bagel Shops Are Among Yelp’s 10 Best In The State
There truly is nothing better than starting off your morning with a freshly baked bagel, and Yelp recently compiled a list of the best bagel shops across the state. In news that comes as a surprise to not a single New Yorker eight of the top ten shops are right here in New York City…though, if you ask us, all ten should have been from NYC. So while the amount of bagel shops in the city can certainly be overwhelming, if you’re looking to grab yourself some breakfast you may want to start with one of these spots:
PopUp Bagels, Multiple Locations – #1
PopUp Bagels amassed a cult-following for their rippable and dippable bagels that went viral on social media. According to them their goal is simple: “to make you the best, freshest bagels. No frills, plainly perfect: crispy crust and soft crumb center, just the right size and with a perfect proportion of seeds,” and they certainly do a good job of that–they’ve even won Bagelfest “Best Bagel” two years in a row!
PopUp Bagels typically offers five bagel flavors at a time as well as plain and special schmears like Cranberry Butter or Sunny’s Sesame Sensational Schmear. Searches in New York for PopUp Bagels have increased a whopping 2,751% on Yelp year-over-year.
Downtown – 177 Thompson St.
Liberty Bagels, Multiple Locations – #2
We’re totally not surprised Liberty Bagels made it onto the list–there’s a reason we’ve done collaborative SNYC bagels with them in the past and gave them our Secret NYC stamp of approval! Their claim to social-media fame is their rainbow bagel (which is free on your birthday) but honestly they’re all delicious.
Best Bagel & Coffee, Midtown – #3
Bakers at Best Bagel & Coffee freshly bake 2,000 to 3,000 hand-rolled bagels each day, creating flavors such as Jalapeno Everything, Blueberry, Sun Dried Tomato Pesto, and Cinnamon Raisin. And their flavored cream cheese creations are out of this world– they have a Wasabi cream cheese which Yelpers have referred to as “heaven, a good little kick with the salty salmon,” along with Bacon Honey Sriracha, and Avocado Lime.
Their bagels are known for being massive, fresh, and having the perfect dough consistency.
Between the Bagel, Astoria, Queens – #4
What sets Between the Bagel apart from the rest is their Korean spin on their bagel creations, like their Bulgogi Bagel which is loaded with bulgogi, kimchi, egg, and cheese. The owner Ben knows all the regulars and exudes positive energy, so even just going into the bagel shop is an experience in and of itself. Beyond the bagels try their rice balls, affectionately named Ben’s Balls, which are filled with kimchi, cheese, and bulgogi.
Oh, and if you’re heading there on a weekend be prepared to wait upwards of 45 minutes.
Russ & Daughters, Multiple Locations – #6
Russ & Daughters is an iconic city staple, and this family-run Jewish deli is known for it’s incredible bagels and lox. The talk of the town is their Classic Bagel & Lox Sandwich, made with Gaspe Nova Smoked Salmon and your choice of cream cheese.
Absolute Bagels, UWS – #7
If you’re looking for endless cream cheese options and homemade bagels hand-rolled to perfection, this UWS bagel shop is definitely worth the trip. Absolute Bagels sticks to traditional methods ensuring that each bagel is baked to a golden brown and offers a satisfying crunch.
Apollo Bagels, Multiple Locations – #8
Apollo Bagels started as a pop-up and grew to having two permanent NYC homes where you can grab yourself a bagel hot out of the oven. Their bagels are perfectly crusty and chewy and while they have really delicious bagel sandwiches you also can’t go wrong with a simple everything bagel with cream cheese.
Ess-a-Bagel, Multiple Locations – #10
First established in 1976, Ess-a-Bagel is a NYC fan favorite serving up fluffy and delicious bagels. Our suggestion is to grab one of their Ess-a-Faves like the Signature Favorite (sliced nova, scallion cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and capers) or Mr. Nova Lova (sliced nova, avocado, red onion, and avocado garlic cream cheese).
