Instead, people should aim to travel on the Saturday before (November 23rd), the Monday before (November 25th) or Thanksgiving day itself (November 28th). For departure flights, passengers should look to book Thanksgiving travel on either the Wednesday, Tuesday or Friday after Thanksgiving.

To illustrate this even further, U.S. security checkpoints saw a total of 2.9 million people on the Sunday after Thanksgiving last year, compared to just 1.5 million people on Thanksgiving day. With yearly trends showing the following Sunday to be one of the busiest travel days in the year, it’s expected to be no different this time around.

The average Thanksgiving airfare is currently $298 per round-trip ticket. However, if you have to wait to buy for any reason, at least Google Flights now pays you the difference if your booking drops in price prior to your departure date.

And though many Americans only receive the Thursday and Friday off of work, you’re best bet is to either take extra time off or work remotely to accommodate for better flight options. Overall the best practices to keep in mind when booking holiday travel is to be flexible and book in advance.
