U.S. Citizens May Soon Be Able To Save Their Passports To Google Wallet
Travelers are continuing to opt for greater digitalization to save themselves time and stress, such as the EES system, and Google is restlessly working to improve its functions and digital capabilities. Most recently, Google Wallet rolled out the ability to hold a digital version of certain state-issued IDs. Now, Google is beta testing doing the same with U.S. passports.
What is Google Wallet?
You might not realize it, but Google Wallet is a fairly new feature that only originated about two years ago. Since then, millions of people across more than 90 countries and territories use it to store credit cards, plane tickets, passes and so on.
Which state-issued IDs can be saved to Google Wallet?
As of now, only state-issued IDs or driver’s licenses in California can be saved on Android user’s Google Wallet. However, the capabilities will expand to New Mexico, Iowa and Ohio in the next few months.
How can I add my passport to Google Wallet?
Users can open their Google Wallet to select “create an ID pass with your U.S. passport.” Instructions will prompt you to scan the security chip on the back of your passport. Next, you’ll need to take a video verification selfie. Then, give Google Wallet a few minutes to process and your ID pass should be ready to use.

Where does my digital ID pass work?
Once you’ve created your new ID pass using your passport on Google Wallet, you’ll be able to use this pass at select TSA checkpoints for domestic travel. Google intends to expand the use of its ID pass for identity verification, car rentals and account recovery.
Don’t forget, if you plan to travel internationally next year, some countries will require U.S. passport holders to have a special travel authorization.
Does this digital ID pass replace my physical ID?
No. “This technology is in its early stages, so it’s important to know that a digital ID in Google Wallet is not a replacement for your physical ID. For now, you need to carry a physical ID with you when traveling,” shared Google.
How does Google Wallet keep my passport safe?
Google Wallet is equipped with Android’s privately designed advanced security. Since all saved IDs are encrypted, users must verify their identity either by pin, passcode or fingerprint. Futhermore, users can choose how much information they’re willing to share upon reviewing what information is necessary to use the feature.
