Hudson Yards Is Getting A Green Space The Size Of Bryant Park

In the midst of all the excitement, a proposed Hudson Yards park has seemingly gone under the radar.

Just a few short weeks ago, renters began signing up for the buzzy Hudson Yards affordable housing units. (Studios start at a staggering $1,655.)

Then, New Yorkers’ ears perked up with the mention of the proposed Hudson Yards casino. Within that $12 billion undertaking is a new green space.

All about the new Hudson Yards park, Hudson Green

Part of the proposed project is to build Hudson Yards West on top of the undeveloped western rail yards. This includes the casino, new housing units, a new public school, and a bucolic respite for New Yorkers, comparable in size to Bryant Park.

“At the center of it all is Hudson Green, a 5.6-acre rolling green park with incredible river vistas, hundreds of trees for hot summer days, gardens, a playground and a dog park,” Jeff T. Blau, CEO of Related Companies, said in a statement. “We truly believe it will be an oasis that becomes the new calling card of the neighborhood.”

The public park overlooking the Hudson River will be created by Hollander Design and Sasaki, as part of a master plan designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), per the press release.

What’s more, visitors can expect over 300 trees, 500 shrubs, flower beds, and native plantings. Plus, kiddos will be delighted to explore a new NYC playground.

This news of public green space arrives at an interesting time in New York’s history, as Mayor Eric Adams vows to “put the ‘park’ back in Park Avenue” and the Elizabeth Street Garden faces demolition.

As more information develops on this new park in NYC, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
