NJ Transit Will Be FREE For An Entire Week This Month

New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy, just announced a Fare Holiday coming to NJ Transit that will grant commuters free rides for an entire week as a “thank you” to those who depend on New Jersey’s public transportation.

The promotion will run from August 26 through September 2, 2024, in which all fares will be waived. NJ Transit recognizes the significant impact its service disruptions have caused this summer and hopes this fare holiday is just one way to make amends as they continue to strive for an improved customer experience.

“Understanding that our commuters have faced many disruptions this summer, we are providing a one week fare holiday for NJ TRANSIT riders,” said Governor Murphy. “As we work diligently with Amtrak to investigate and address the issues that have occurred this summer, especially on the Northeast Corridor, we hope this fare holiday offers our commuters some relief.  We also encourage New Jerseyans to take advantage of this opportunity, and we continue to be thankful to the many New Jerseyans who depend on public transit.”

To ensure service for New Jerseyans remain up to par with expectations, NJ Transit will add resources to increase testing of transformers in substations and strategizing how to expedite repairs and upgrades.

Riders already with an August monthly pass will receive a 25% discount on their September pass, whether they purchase via the app, ticket window or Ticket Vending Machine.

Much of the season’s service disruptions have occurred on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor (NEC). Already, Amtrak has escalated its efforts to inspect and repair track signal systems and substations along the NEC, in addition to an increase in NJ Transit’s platform equipment inspections.

For recent service issues on the River LINE light rail, NJ Transit has added an interim bus plan to aid commuters during weekdays.
