Shark Spotted Lurking In Rockaway Waters

Thanks to the drones that were first distributed across NYC beaches last summer to keep swimmers safe, the latest shark sighting was recorded at Rockaway Beach on Thursday, July 11th.

At the time of the initial sighting, the beach was closed from 64th St to 104th St in the early afternoon. Yet shortly after, another sighting was caught on the drones, closing beaches from 58th to 81st.

Red flags were seen flying to signal to swimmers of the water’s high hazard and temporary closure. It has not been discerned whether the two confirmed shark sightings were the same animal.

Today, the beaches have reopened to swimmers as numerous surfers were spotted venturing into the water this morning.

Shark sightings aren’t atypical for New York waters, hence why the drones were implemented in the first place. You can learn more about shark safety protocol in New York here.
