These US Cities Will Actually Pay You To Move There
No city will ever take NYC’s place in our heart–there’s a reason it’s one of the best big cities in the US–but living here certainly isn’t cheap and, believe it or not, there are cities that are willing to pay people to move there.
As reported by the NY Post, some cities and states offer a cash incentive, along with other perks, to entice people to move there–yes, apparently it’s not just a European thing (for reference, this wintry village in Switzerland pays people to move there)!
And, last year alone (2023), over 50,000 people were enticed enough to actually make the move by being offered perks such as signing bonuses, access to local amenities, and networking opportunities worth anywhere from $500 to $20,000.
The website MakeMyMove lists 60 different communities across the US offering various incentives, including $12,000 in cash, free outdoor recreation experiences and gear rentals, connections to banking services, loans, and credit deals, memberships to co-working spaces, and more.
Some participating communities include:
- Bloomington, Indiana
- Abilene, Texas
- Charleston, West Virginia
- Tulsa, Oklahoma
- Rochester, New York
While some of the communities are looking for strictly remote workers, some want in-person and others want a mix, so there’s plenty of opportunity for everybody. But all are looking for both economic and cultural growth, and new residents can bring that.
Those interested simply must find a place they love, apply to let the community know you’re interested, and, if you’re selected, make your move! Most programs require that new residents stay at least a year, but all hope that you’ll love the place so much you’ll permanently call it home.
According to the website, those who relocate save an average of $20,000 per year in their new communities, and the company has moved households over 130,000 miles.
