Are TSA PreCheck Passengers No Longer Required To Show Physical IDs?
With record traveler numbers across NYC airports in 2023, it’s important to stay up to date on the latest information regarding your local airports. Lucky for you, we’re here to relay some of that information.
Major renovations being done to airports like JFK and Newark are bringing with it groundbreaking technological updates. These advances intend to improve passenger convenience and experience while traveling.
Other major airports such as O’Hare International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport are undergoing similar advances, with new “touchless technology.” Specifically, United Airlines has updated their terms of operation for TSA PreCheck travelers at the aforementioned airports.
According to their website, TSA PreCheck travelers no longer need to show a boarding pass and physical ID at security checkpoints or bag drop. Instead, they can simply use TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, that scans passengers faces to verify identities.
TSA PreCheck status is available through a $78 application fee to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals and lawful permanent residents. Once approved, the status is valid for five years.
Of course, travelers will have to give permission for United to use facial recognition. They can grant this permission by following the steps to enable TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, which includes scanning your passport and adding your Known Traveler Number (KTN) in the United app, and clicking on TSA PreCheck and travel documents in the app where you will grant said permission and check in for your flight. Following through with the steps ensures you won’t have to show any form of physical ID or boarding pass on your next trip.
Be mindful that the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is still in its testing phase at O’Hare’s bag drop counter so you may be asked to show a physical ID still.
United plans to eventually roll out additional TSA PreCheck Touchless ID services to more gates, bag drop counters and security checkpoints. They will continue to update this page, so be sure to check back routinely when the services become available at your nearest airport.
