New Study Names NYC The Priciest Pizza City In The Country

New Yorkers eat a lot of pizza–rightfully so considering NYC is the best US city for pizza addicts and is home to the best pizzeria in the entire country.

But unfortunately we’re handing over more dough for our slices than ever before–the cost of an NYC pizza slice jumped 19% over the last eight years and, for the most part, we’ve had to sadly say goodbye to the iconic dollar slice.

Pizza prices are even rising faster nationally than overall inflation at a rate of 4% compared to 3.5%.

And now NYC has even come as far as being named the priciest pizza city in the country!

According to a study done by real estate website Clever, the average cost of a one topping NYC pie is $33.65, the highest price in history and pricier than anywhere else in the country.

It goes without saying that New Yorkers think this price is “ridiculous,” according to Yahoo News.

Scott Wiener, owner of Scott’s Pizza Tours, told Yahoo News “it should be no surprise that it’s more expensive now” when taking into consideration increased labor expenses, ever-increasing percentages paid to third-party delivery services, and higher rents.

Plus, Wiener adds that pizza-by-the-slice shops are now selling higher quality pizza.

And this high quality, mouthwatering pizza is what has given NYC a reputation for having some of the best pizza around–41% of Americans consider it a top five pizza city, according to the study

Clever’s study was based on a number of things, comparing the 50 largest metro areas in America on factors such as:

  • Reputation score (the results from a poll of 1,000 Americans asked to name which cities they consider to be the top five for pizza in the country)
  • Pizza restaurants per 100,000 residents
  • Pizza Passion score (local Google search volume for pizza-related terms)
  • Average Yelp rating for local pizza restaurants
  • Local price of a large cheese pizza
  • Cost to buy a large cheese pizza each week as a percentage of median annual income
  • Local price of a large pepperoni pizza
  • Cost to buy a large pepperoni pizza each week as a percentage of median annual income
