February 13 special election wraps: Dais, Suozzi win

Yet another special election wrapped this Tuesday, Feb. 13, with a new state assemblymember-elect in the 77th District in the Bronx and a throwback Congressmember-elect in the 3rd District in Queens/Long Island.

And the winners are Democratic nominee and lawyer Landon Dais and former Congressmember Tom Suozzi in their respective races!

Dais seemingly had the assembly race to replace former Assemblymember Latoya Joyner in the bag, while Suozzi, who had previously been elected in the 3rd district before the George Santos debacle, was locked in a tight congressional race with Republican Mazi Melesa Pilip.

Early voting capped with only 272 voters in the assembly race and 9,064 in the congressional race just before Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the New York City Board of Elections (BOE).

Voting on Election Day this Tuesday was probably impacted by the heavy snowfall that hit the city, which prompted the mayor to announce a travel advisory.

Dais won by 74.03% of the votes, according to unofficial election night results posted by the BOE. Norman Sobie McGill, Republican candidate for the 77th Assembly District, earned 20.78% of the votes.

“Tonight marks a significant triumph, not solely for myself and my supporters, but for all of the 77th Assembly District,’” Dais said in a statement. “Despite the challenges posed by the snow storm, the people made their voices heard. I extend my deepest gratitude to all volunteers, staff members, unions, organizations, and elected officials who have placed their trust in me. Rest assured, I am committed to tirelessly serving you and ensuring your pride in endorsing my candidacy.”

Suozzi won by 61.58% of the votes, according to unofficial election night results. Pilip only earned 38.13% of the votes.

The New York State Board of Elections unofficial election night results vary slightly from the city’s BOE but the numbers still have Dais and Suozzi clinching the lead.

The primaries to be held on June 25 are another election cycle that will determine if the special election winners stay in office until the final round of voting later this year in November.
