Former Zoo Owl, Flaco, Still Flies Freely Over NYC A Year After His Escape
Around this time last year, vandals had cut through the enclosure of Eurasian eagle-owl, Flaco, at the Central Park Zoo, releasing him into the wild. It was nearly a month after his escape that the major search rescue was finally called off after the zoo had bmade no further progress.
At first, many were concerned about Flaco’s survival skills after 12 years in captivity. Yet, he proved to be just fine on his own—now flying freely around NYC a year later. Soon after his escape, Flaco showed off his surprising hunting skills feeding on mice and rats on park grounds.
Today, bird watchers can still catch the owl perched over Central Park, though he’s expanded his travels across Manhattan. The vandals who caused his escape are still unknown to the public.
He’s now joined other beloved animal icons of NYC like the Madarin Duck and Rover the bald eagle.
