The G Train Will Be Suspended For 6 Weeks This Summer
Back in December 2022 the MTA announced plans to upgrade and modernize the G train signal system, and though it will bring straphangers more reliable service, it also requires the line shutting down for quite some time.
The bad news: the G train will shut down for a total of six weeks this summer. The good news: the repairs will be split into three sections, so the entire line won’t shut down at once.
The MTA said dates for the closures have not yet been finalized, though a tentative schedule is as follows:
- June 28-July 5: No service 24/7 between Court Square and Greenpoint Avenue
- July 5-Aug. 12: No service between Court Square and Bedford-Nostrand
- Aug. 12-Sept. 2: No service between Bedford-Nostrand and Hoyt-Schemerhorn
Thankfully, the MTA isn’t leaving us completely on our own–they’ll be running shuttle buses along the G line’s route during the shutdowns.
According to the Greenpointers, Brooklyn politicians are pushing back against the around-the-clock shutdowns, stating that the “drastic shutdown measures would be too big of a burden for a neighborhood entirely reliant on the G train.”
City Council Member Lincoln Restler said in a statement to Greenpointers:
The G train is the lifeline for the Greenpoint community — with thousands of people depending on it every day to get to work and to keep local businesses thriving. While the planned signal improvements are a vital infrastructure investment, a full shutdown of the G train in Greenpoint for six weeks would cause unnecessary harm and disruption to our community. I’m urging the MTA to act nimbly and find alternative construction approaches.
Moreover, Assemblymember Emily Gallagher is calling for the MTA to pursue a less disruptive schedule.
Gallagher also suggested the MTA look into additional upgrades that go beyond the train’s signal system, such as a full eight cars and the restoration of service all the way to Forest Hills, Queens where the G used to terminate, according to Greenpointers.
Major service disruptions will hopefully come to an end by 2025, though the project won’t be completed until the end of 2027.
