Central Park Will Be Illuminated By 1,000 Dazzling Drones This Weekend

Get ready for the performance of a lifetime this weekend as NYC’s Central Park will be treated to its first ever drone show.

A flock of 1,000 drones will take to the skies above the park this weekend, Saturday, October 21st, in a show that’s five years in the making. And this isn’t no small performance–it’s the largest public art work in Central Park in almost twenty years!

Dubbed Franchise Freedom, the open-air public art performance will mimic a flock of starlings.

Presented by DRIFT and Therme, the artwork is a way to explore the relationship between humans, nature, and technology. A soundtrack by Joep Beving was even created specifically to go along with the performance, and will be available to listen to on the DRIFT website (viewers are encouraged to download the soundtrack and listen to it during the performance).

The show will dazzle New Yorkers three times–at 7 p.m., 8 p.m., and 9 p.m.–each performance lasting ten minutes.

Franchise Freedom will take place at the Lake at Central Park. It will be visible from multiple locations, but recommended viewing locations include:

  • Bethesda Fountain (prime viewing area)
  • Dead Road, Bandshell and Frisbee Hill
  • Boat Landing and drive overpass on West 77th Street

The performance is free and open to the public. For live updates and more information about the event you can head to DRIFT’s website.
