NYC Air Quality-Related Closures & Cancellations
NYC has been under an Air Quality Health Advisory since Tuesday, June 6 due to wafts of smoke from Canadian wildfires, and after NYC hit an AQI level of 342 yesterday, June 7, officially declaring NYC to have the worst air quality in the world, strides are being taken to protect New Yorkers.
Today, Thursday, June 8, 400,000 masks are being distributed at MTA stations, Port Authority Bus Terminal, NY State Parks, and Javits Center.
But beyond the masks, many closures are occurring throughout the city to encourage New Yorkers to stay indoors. The closures are as follows:
Schools & extracurricular activities
NYC Public schools are closed today, June 8, for Anniversary Day / Chancellor’s Day. It is a remote-work day for staff.
All NYC public schools have also canceled all outdoor activities.
Alternate side parking
Alternate side parking is suspended today, June 8. Meters are still in effect.
Airports
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) paused and delayed flights yesterday, June 7, due to reduced visibility.
Today, the Federal Aviation Administration tweeted that flights from the Northeast, Ohio, and Mid-Atlantic bound to LaGuardia Airport are paused. All flights bound for Newark Airport are delayed.

Sports
Several sports games saw cancellations yesterday, including:
- White Sox-Yankees game in NYC – rescheduled to Thursday, June 8
- Tigers-Phillies game in Philadelphia – rescheduled to Thursday, June 8
- Lynx-Liberty game in NYC – rescheduled for a later date
As of now all planned games for today, Thursday, June 8, will continue as planned.
Cultural institutions & events
- Uptown Night Market – rescheduled for Thursday, June 15
- Bryant Park Picnic Performances (Contemporary Dance: Robin Dunn and more) – cancelled
- Brooklyn Public Library – closed
Zoos & aquariums
The Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and the New York Aquarium are all closed Thursday, June 8.
Outdoor dining
